Protecting and Keeping Your Headspace

Last week was a rough week. Posting about active shooter drills and researching active shooter situations took its toll. I was not prepared for the mental anguish that came with that exercise. So let’s talk about protecting and keeping your headspace in a good place. Here’s what I did. Add your ideas in the comments!

  1. Got out in the sun: I work inside so I don’t see the sun unless I make it a point to get up and get outside, especially in the winter.

  2. Did self care: I was having pain in my back from carrying all that tension, so I went and did a dry needling session with a PT that I love.

  3. Had tough conversations: Even if you don’t want to talk about what you’re feeling, you do need to express it so someone. I’m lucky because I have a SO who is my rock in stormy seas.

  4. Got active: whether it is digging in the garden (active + sun!) or sweating through a workout (I love Supernatural VR), making your body move and expanding your capacity physically is so helpful to protecting your headspace. I’ve heard of generals who, when faced with impossible decisions, left the team to clear their head on a run. And when they got back, they got down to business.

  5. Meditation: Once you’re out of your negative headspace, maintaining a positive, hopeful headspace is essential to being able to make decisions. Keeping your calm and being able to function in high stress i
